Microscope camera
What are they?
A microscope camera is used to take photographs of small objects. It has been around almost as long as standard photography. In essence it records the enlarged light waves from a microscope either on film or, more recently, digitally. Microscope cameras are any of a wide range of products used in the fields of microscopic photography, also known as photomicrography. Microscope cameras are used in fields like scientific research, medical examinations and forensic investigations.
Photomicrography was invented by Joseph Javier Woodward in the 1870’s, and first presented to the general public at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, where it was a sensation. His method used direct sunlight to create the image and the machinations filled an entire room.
As with standard photography, photomicrography has become far more accurate and capable. There are microscope cameras made for both average consumers and professionals. Some cameras are custom designed to take microscope photographs there are a myriad of available adapter lenses that serve as microscopic lenses on standard digital cameras. The most accurate microscope cameras are digital microscope cameras (DMC’s). The largest producers of consumer DMC’s are Canon and Nikon; together they garner over 90% of the consumer DMC market. There is a wide range of specialty companies producing medical and forensic grade microscope cameras. In fact, a wide range of devices can do everything from still photography to continuous microscopic video, and each device has its own specific uses. These days, everything is done digitally.
Storing images digitally has opened up the opportunity to more quickly, and efficiently store large amounts of digital pictures on memory cards that are comparably the same size as a standard U.S. penny. Microscope cameras allow large amounts of research, and study, to be accurately accounted for. They also allow the researcher to go back into their pictures, to examine their findings at any time with ease.
Before the digital microscope camera was invented, a researcher would need to have the pictures individually developed and then they would have to actually store the photos in a place where they would be preserved from the elements in order to avoid them from being ruined. Since digital pictures can easily be stored onto a hard drive, it has greatly improved the way that a microscope camera is used.
There are times when a microscope camera is extremely vital in preserving details about the specimen that is being observed. There may be a time when a researcher is conducting experiments with a microscope and they want to capture an image of a specimen during a specific time. Having a microscope camera enables this to happen, and with ease. A researcher can later go back and look at the images that were taken with the microscope camera in order to conduct further research, and to share their work and findings with other people who are part of the process.
